St. Joseph's College (Autonomous), Bangalore, is one of the oldest colleges in the state of Karnataka with a history of more than 130 years. It has been conferred as College of Excellence by the University Grants Commission (India).It was awarded the highest rating, A (3.73/4), in the re-accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2007.It imparts graduate, post-graduate and research education. The St. Joseph's college has an admission policy of preferential option for the poor.
St. Joseph's College of Commerce, the St. Joseph's Evening College, the St. Joseph's Boys' High School and the St. Joseph's Indian High School, the St. Joseph's College has staff to respond to the needs of more than 5000 students. The institution has four main buildings, located in the center of the Cantonment. The St. Joseph's College of Commerce, St. Joseph’s Institute of Management(previously St. Joseph's College of Business Administration), St. Joseph's Evening College and Pre-University College are in the vicinity of St. Patrick's Church and Good Shepherd Convent. St. Joseph's College itself is located on Langford Road near Richmond Circle, Bangalore.
St. Joseph's College of Commerce, SJCC, is a Bangalore University-affiliated college operated by the Jesuits. It is autonomous and has an independent examination and recognition system. It is situated in central Bangalore at Brigade Road. St. Joseph's is accredited to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) at the 5-star level, and was rated one of the top ten commerce institutions in India for five consecutive years (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010) by the magazine India Today.
History:The college traces its history to 1882, when the Missions Estranges' de Paris established St Joseph's European High School.[citation needed] Its operations were handed to the Jesuits in 1937 and the Department of Commerce created in 1949. In 1972 St. Joseph's College was divided, with its College of Arts and Sciences and its College of Commerce becoming independent, although both remain under the administration of the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society. St Joseph's College of Commerce (SJCC) and St Joseph's College of Business Administration (SJCBA) moved to 163, Brigade Road, and St Joseph's Evening College became an independent college.
In 1996,SJCBA started offering two-year, full-time postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) with recognition from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Govt Of India. By an order of the government Karnataka, pre-university sections from both St Joseph's College of Arts & Science and St Joseph's College of Commerce were bifurcated to form into one junior College, St. Joseph's Pre-University College. St Joseph's College of Commerce is a landmark on Brigade Road house.
In 2014 SJCBA signed a MoU to cooperate with the global body of professional accountants ACCA in offering a joint B.Com program. SJCBA has also been noted for its research. The college publishes the annual Blue Chip.
Vision of the College: The educational objective of St. Joseph’s College is to prepare men and women for the service of the country. The College provides students with plentiful opportunities to critically understand society and its structures so that education becomes a tool to work for a human and just society. Stress is laid on academic excellence, character formation, social concern and human development.
PRO and Placement Cell:The college believes that establishing links between education and labor market is an important motivator for undergraduate and post graduate students pursuing their education.The Centre for Skill Development and Placement, St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), a student run activity under the guidance of the Faculty Coordinator and has the following objectives.
Objectives: 1. Information Dissemination :To disseminate information regarding various higher education courses, competitive examinations and vacancies in the job market by posting them on the placement notice boards. The centre organises various talk sessions with experienced professionals to keep students abreast of the various avenues available for them.
2. Career guidance: Personality Assessment & Competency Mapping To arrange for Personality Assessment & Competency Mapping of students. This activity entails helping students to identify various competencies they posses and enabling them to work on areas they need to improve and help them in making suitable career choices.
3. Training for skill development :This objective is to organize training program for a variety of skills development required in the labor market. Workshops on knowledge and skill development for taking various competitive examinations, basic managerial skills, resume writing, Group Discussions and mock Interviews is organized.
4. Internships: To establish contacts with various governments, nongovernmental and corporate sector for lectures, internships and in -house training.
5. Placement Interviews : Prospective employers can contact the Placement Officer in advance and can visit the college for Campus Hiring from September to February of very year.
